Evolved player vs. player system ? great things to come!
PVP
Hyboria is a lawless place, and we even encourage players going at each other, at least on the numerous PvP servers. That?s what?s good in life, right? Still, unfair and unmotivated aggression should have consequences, and that?s why we?re now introducing the so-called fugitive system. Better think about your actions!
Within the end of June we are pumping out many enhancements to the PvP system, including PvP levels and gear, in addition to the fugitive system. If you are into this type of gameplay, exciting days are coming!
More quests ? including dozens more with full voice-over!
Quests
Soon we will be bringing in tons of new quests to Hyboria, spread out all across the three realms of Aquilonia, Cimmeria and Stygia. We will be putting in over a dozen new quests for Eiglophian Mountains, and we are also introducing several dozen new quests for levels thirty and up.
Due to popular demand we will also be adding voices to about sixty of the most central quests, improving the atmosphere in the game and extending that feeling of immersion even further.
Enhanced graphical interface for chat, friends and guild!
GUI
We have looked at your feedback regarding the interfaces for friends and guild, and have gotten tons of great ideas for enhancements. As such we are now redesigning these elements to make them better-looking and easier to use, all based on the feedback you have provided us!
These enhancements include being able to divide friends into categories, simulating an interface resembling what you find in popular instant messaging services. We are also enhancing the chat interface.
Notable enhancements being made to important Stygian dungeons
Dungeon
We have identified a few dungeons in Stygia, mainly the Khopshef Province that will be receiving some special loving. These dungeons include Pyramid of the Ancients and Treasury of the Ancients, and we will be breathing some new life into them so you can spread death in them.
Most noticeably we will be redoing some of the gameplay mechanics in the dungeon, and thereby adding more encounters and a better scripted experience. And, of course, we are doing enhancements to the loot distribution there as well.
A massive new dungeon for the Thunder River area!
New Dungeon
Funcom are focusing heavily on adding even more content to the game, not only in terms of quests as described above, but also in terms of areas and land mass. In the not-too-distant future we will be introducing a new high-level dungeon to the Aquilonian Thunder River area!
While we don?t want to reveal the entire dungeon quite yet, we do want to show you some early images and talk a little bit about what you can expect when the dungeon opens for players.
Vast enhancements being made to equipment and loot!
Loot
We are always working on having as good as possible loot, but recently we have added even more resources to this vital part of the game, and there is a good chance you have already seen the fruits of this labor. The item team is now working relentlessly on making items and equipment considerably more exciting in the game. This involves re-distribution item visuals and improving the loot drops.
There are tens of thousands of items in the game already, and our job now is to make sure everything looks visually diverse and that useful loot can be found without having to raid the most challenging dungeons.
Future Developments
Looking too closely into the crystal ball might be dangerous, but we will take our chances. Here are some things you can expect later this year.
Powerpoints has arrived in Hyboria, but the benefits awaits!
Powerpoints
In an effort to reward players who put time and effort into Age of Conan, we have devised the Powerpoints system. These are points you will gather by doing special actions in the game, such as being a member of an active guild, owning a battlekeep, or advancing beyond level eighty.
You will also collect Powerpoints simply by staying subscribed to the game. You can already now start collecting Powerpoints in the game, but the services and benefits will be added to the game at a later date.
Guild alliances, legendary battlekeeps and wonders of the world!
Kingship
Oh, man. This is a big one. Later this year we will be introducing a massive new addition to the game, tentatively titled Kingship. This will allow guilds to form alliances and fight for special battlekeeps where they can construct wonders of the world ? or steal them from other alliances!
We will also be fleshing out the Powerpoints system in this update, allowing the player to generate points by being a member of a conquering guild. We will also be adding a lot of Powerpoints benefits in this update.
A huge, new Cimmerian outdoor area ? introducing Ymir's Pass!
Ymir's Pass
Right now a part of the live team is working on realizing an entire new outdoor region called Ymir?s Pass. This region, located in Cimmeria, will be comparable in size to Eiglophian Mountains and will include a slew of new monsters, quests and some very interesting geography!
While we have already progressed far on making this playfield, we would like to wait a bit prior to showing it in its entire splendor, but we do have some fancy screenshots and concepts to show you, just so you can get a feel of what to expect when the mountains once more will call your name.
Enhancements to player cities, battlekeeps and the crafting system
Battlekeeps
Many guilds have now begun conquering the many resource and gathering areas of Hyboria ? Laceish Plains, Poitain and Purple Lotus Swamp. Here they are constructing entire guild cities, getting ready for the ultimate opportunity to construct a battlekeep in the Border Kingdom!
We have been getting a lot of feedback on these areas, so in the months ahead we will be doing numerous changes both to the cities as well as to the crafting system, making it more robust and more exciting. We will also be opening up more opportunities to define and customize your cities!
PVP Evolved - Drastic Enhancements Coming!
Posted: - 13.06.2008
Did you know that the majority of Age of Conan players is playing on servers flagged for player vs. player activities? We do, and this month we are about to introduce a slew of drastic improvements that will breathe new life into this important gameplay feature!
Following the launch of Age of Conan we sat down immediately and started fleshing out some ideas for what we wanted to do with the PvP (player vs. player) features in the game, and now we are ready to reveal it to you. All of these changes, additions and improvements are expected to hit within the end of June or very early July.
Here are some of the exciting things you will see pop into the game any day now.
PvP consequences ? the fugitive system
No longer will evil misdeeds go unpunished. Of course, Hyboria is ruthless and barbaric so don?t expect anyone to deal out justice just because someone smacks you about with a very heavy axe, but some justice is actually now being introduced to the world.
This is where the fugitive system comes in, presented in a set of colors defining your fugitive status ? from blue to orange and eventually the deadly red.
Everyone is by default classified as ?blue?, but your actions as a player killer will affect your fugitive rating. If you kill someone way under your level, you will notice that you will very quickly move to red. So will actions such as killing someone repeatedly, or other general unfairness. The more serious the crime, the quicker you rise in fugitive.
Obtaining red status will be quite painful to you. This means that other players can kill you without rising in fugitive level, and if they manage to kill you while you have red fugitive you will actually drop one of your better items and gold that they can loot!
Of course, turning red will be a double-edged sword. Sure, it will get you a lot of attention and many will probably see you as a danger to be avoided. But at the same time, people will hunt you down for your items and your gold so be very, very careful!
PvP levels, ranks and PvP gear enabled

Now it is very important that we underline the fact that the fugitive system is not meant to punish player killing. It is only meant to punish unfair player-killing. Player killing in general is a central part of Age of Conan, so we also want to reward you for it!
That?s why we are now activating PvP levels. Soon you will be able to gain PvP levels by simply engaging in such activities, and there will be 10 such PvP levels in total.
However, that?s not all. Once you have reached the 10th PvP level you will be able to earn special PvP ranks beyond that. These are very hard to acquire, and you will lose ranks if you get defeated so it?s a constant battle to keep you rank up. And you will want to both gain PvP levels and keep your PvP rank up, as this will give you very exclusive benefits.
That?s because we will be introducing PvP specific gear in this update. You will be able to seek out a special vendor that sells this gear, and if you can afford it and you have the required PvP level (or PvP rank for some higher level items), then you can buy it!
PvP gear will come in all shapes and sizes. Some will be class and race specific, while some will be usable by everyone. Below you can take a look at some of the gear that we have available in our internal builds right now. Of course, a lot more will be available!
General fixes and improvements to PvP

Of course, improving PvP in Age of Conan is not only about introducing such high-profile features and content. It?s also about making various small changes, fixes, improvements and additions needed to make it a more enjoyable experience for everyone.
We will be doing various fine-tuning, and the patch notes for this update will of course contain the specifics. But let?s take a look at some of the changes that we are making.
First off, we are introducing a dueling functionality. This allows players to duel each other, both on PvP and PvE servers, without any serious repercussions. It also allows players on PvE servers to engage in PvP without having to go into the PvP mini-games, allowing them to test their grit (or solve an argument) against each other directly!
We are also doing major changes to the way damage is handled in PvP (without going into any more specific details right now), and we are also making it so that you can not attack members of your own guild (now you can duel instead, of course).
Other changes you will observe are for instance improvements to the ?charge? ability that all soldier classes have. If you charge someone you will stun them, making it much more useful. Casters will also see major improvements, so keep your eyes out for more news!

Introducing Powerpoints
Posted: - 13.06.2008
In an effort to reward those investing time and effort into Age of Conan, thus allowing Funcom to put even more resources into adding and improving upon the game, we are now introducing a points system that will give you tons of exclusive benefits!
These are exciting times in the world of Hyboria, and adventurers are in high demand to fend off the forces of doom and evil that is invading the lands. In an effort to attract a steadier stream of heroes willing to lay down their lives, Conan is handing out points to anyone who can prove their commitment to surviving in the brutal world of Hyboria!
Okay, so that?s the in-character version of it. Funcom is now introducing the concept of Powerpoints. These can be spent on various different exclusive benefits, services and items! Powerpoints are generated over time in various different ways, as detailed later.
Let?s first take a look at what these Powerpoints can get you:
- You can buy Powerfeats ? exclusive feats that can buff your character and provide you with new and very powerful spells and abilities!
- You can take gathered pearls and turn them into Powerpearls. These can be put into weapons and armor to make them even more powerful!
- You can obtain special offers that we will put into the game regularly, but only if you have enough Powerpoints! This can be anything from mounts to spells!
- You can convert Powerpoints into so-called rested experience, effectively allowing you to level up faster than you would otherwise!
- You can purchase exclusive weapons, armor, potions, recipes, ingredients, and other times using a mix of ordinary gold and Powerpoints.
The good thing is that Powerpoints are retroactively applied to new characters. So points you have generated will also befall new characters you make, making it easier to level up and play with new characters. This is simply to improve replayability for you.
So how can you acquire Powerpoints? Here are some of the ways:
Having an active subscription
You will earn one Powerpoint each week for all characters on your account as long as you have an active subscription. You do not have to actually log in and play the game; we will simply reward you for your aid in allowing Funcom to improve Age of Conan.
Having many guild members
Once your guild reaches a high number of members, you will start seeing the benefits. If one hundred unique members log into the guild at least once every week, all members in that guild will be granted one Powerpoint that week. So make sure your guild grows!
By owning a battlekeep
If your guild is lucky enough to own a battlekeep, every member in your guild will receive one Powerpoint every week you have that battlekeep. Of course, holding on to such a keep will prove to be a formidable task, so be sure to protect your property!
Post-level 80 reward system
Okay, so you have reached level 80 and there are no more experience levels to reach. But with the Powerpoint system you will now earn one point each time you were supposed to reach a new level, effectively rewarding you for continuing to develop your character!
By winning PvP mini-games
After having reached level 40, you will get one Powerpoint for every 40th mini-game you win. This is basically a way for us to reward you if you put a lot of effort into partaking in mini-games with other players and, of course, making sure you win as well!
Please keep in mind that these details might change over time as the game grows. We might also choose to include new ways of earning Powerpoints later.
Please note that you can start earning Powerpoints once your free month of play is up, but the actual benefits will not be available in the game until later this year. However, we encourage you to start saving up Powerpoints as soon as possible! When we do launch this service later, you will be at a serious advantage if you have points to spend!
You will start accumulating points once your free month is up, but please note that we have not implemented a tracker in the interface yet. This will appear at the end of June.
Kingship revealed - Huge upgrade planned!
Posted: - 13.06.2008
We will be doing a lot of improvements and additions to Age of Conan in the weeks to come, and we will be sure to tell you about it. But let?s also take this opportunity to gaze deeper into the glass ball, to see what awaits us in the future ? later this year!
Okay, so we?re not ready to give you all the juice on it just yet ? this is, after all, some months away from going in the game. But we want to lift the veil a little bit, as we feel that this is such a powerful community builder that it deservers some anticipation!
The tentative name for this update is Kingship, but that might change as we move close to patching it onto the servers. This is basically an update that will introduce some very groundbreaking new features into Age of Conan, such as guild alliances, legendary battlekeeps, and so-called Wonders of the World. And some other, secret stuff!
The Kingship upgrade will also be rooted in the Powerpoints system, and we will be introducing several new features and content. Here is some of what you can expect!
Guild alliances
We want to allow guilds to get together and form alliances, creating strong accumulations of power that can take on some of the biggest challenges on the server, and we will be employing various tools for them to create a strong common identity for the alliance.
Here is a list of some of those tools:
- Alliance flag ? you will be able to acquire a flag that you can carry around on your back, and this flag can be customized for you alliance.
- Alliance cloak ? you will also be able to acquire a cloak that you can customize for your alliance, showing everyone what gathering you hail from.
- Alliance chat ? of course, just as with guilds you will be able to share a common chat channel with all members of all the guilds in the alliance.
- Alliance name ? you will be able to select a name for the alliance, and that name will be shown after your guild name and your character name.
A guild alliance will be quite a political entity, and this among other things involves holding elections to choose alliance leaders and such. Rest assured, guild alliances will have plenty of tools at their disposal when they set out to conquer the known world!
Legendary battlekeeps
Already in the game your guild have the opportunity to build player cities and eventually also conquer battlekeeps. We will, of course, be improving these functionalities as well as we move ahead in the coming months. Kingship will also expand on this feature.
Situated next to the three big cities ? Conarch, Khemi and Tarantia ? will be something called legendary battlekeeps. Massive constructions that can be seen from inside the major cities themselves, and there will only be three of these in total in the online world ? one for each capitol city. Conquering these battlekeeps will be the ultimate challenge!
Guilds will effectively have to team up with each other and become alliances if they want to have any chance of conquering a legendary battlekeep. These will be gigantic battles, and we are aiming for over 300 players to be involved in the battle simultaneously!
That also means we will be doing some technical improvements to the massive battle system to allow for this great number of players in one battle at the same time.
Wonders of the World
These battlekeeps will all have different benefits to provide the alliance that owns it, and they will all be visually very different from each other. You can customize and build upon your legendary battlekeep, just as you would with the ?ordinary? battlekeeps.
Another feature we will be introducing with this upgrade is Wonders of the World. These are powerful constructions rooted deep in the identity of that nation (e.g. the ?Golden Lion of Tarantia? for Aquilonia) and they look epic and magnificent. Each nation has two of these wonders, and they can be built in the legendary battlekeep for that nation.
Building these wonders is a huge effort for anyone in the alliance, and will involve a lot of team work. Once you have built the shell of the wonder in your legendary battlekeep, other guild alliances can steal it and bring it to their city ? so you need to protect it!
The benefits of owning one, two or more of these wonders (can you steal all of them?) is beyond anything you can imagine, but those details are to be revealed at another time!
